Systems Principal Engineer, Extreme Scale Infrastructure (ESI/DCS)

In Dell’s Extreme Scale Infrastructure organization, our mission is to develop custom and semi-custom server, storage, and rack based solutions for customers desiring the best-in-class products tailored to Web Tech and Scientific Computing applications. As a Systems Principal Engineer, you are responsible for providing technical leadership in the delivery of engineering aspects required for enablement, fulfillment, and operation of servers, storage, and infrastructure to specific customers within our targeted markets. Measures of success for this position include delivery of high-quality solutions that meet schedule and development budget goals while providing timely resolution of issues experienced during production builds and initial customer deployments. Additionally, this role will often interact directly with our end customers in the delivery and support of ESI solutions. This position may include occasional travel to customer sites.


  • Specify, design, and validate custom server and storage platforms in support of solution requirements on a per-customer basis, engaging directly with marketing and the customer as needed.

  • Support the development of SOW/RFP responses for the customer, working with ESI marketing, architecture, and program management teams to ensure technically compliant and competitively relevant responses.

  • Perform technical feasibility and evaluation of proposed product solutions to ensure customer requirements and Dell quality, manufacturing and serviceability goals are met.

  • Oversee sample build and coordination for ESI customers, which includes testing and validation of customer specified features, benchmarks and other metrics.

  • Partner with Software Engineering to provide technical support for all customer engagements; before, during and after the sales process.

  • Provide engineering support for delivery of systems to customers, including support at Dell factories during product builds as well as support at integration facilities to ensure systems are correctly built, integrated at the rack or container level, and configured prior to deployment to customers.

  • Work with marketing to ensure that customer priorities and requirements are tracked, understood and incorporated into future product plans.


  • Extensive x86 system engineering experience in either the development of computer or storage systems through an ODM relationship or through direct systems engineering development experience.

  • Strong ability to organize and manage multiple projects, set priorities and work independently under aggressive timelines.

  • Ability to write and analyze requirements, functional specifications, design specifications, test plans, and documentation.

  • Strong knowledge of server and storage hardware architecture and systems, including storage controllers (e.g. RAID/HBA), systems management (e.g. IPMI, Redfish, etc.), and I/O devices.

  • Experience with system hardware in a design, development, test, or equivalent role that requires detailed analysis and debug of issues, leading to root cause identification and resolution.

  • Ability to drive cross-functional development efforts through conception, planning, implementation, and sustaining.

  • Thorough understanding of appropriate technologies, vendor products, and competitor's offerings.

  • Ability to analyze options for critical design elements/features and determine optimum selection.

  • Thorough ability to identify potential product weakness and be able to provide design guidance and recommendations for improvements to subsequent redesigns.

  • Working insight and skill to effectively manage cultural differences.

  • Excellent communication skills; both written and verbal. Confident presenting to customers and/or partners.

  • Ideally, experience engaging with and supporting end customers.

  • Undergraduate degree in electrical or computer engineering and 8 - 10 years of relevant experience or graduate degree and 6 - 8 years of relevant experience.
